Honoring Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day in Our Schools
Dear Colleagues,
Today, schools across Central Okanagan Public Schools will be holding their Remembrance Day ceremonies in advance of the statutory holiday on November 11, when schools will not be in session.
On November 8, Indigenous Veterans Day, we honored First Nations, Métis, and Inuit veterans who served and sacrificed in wars and peacekeeping missions, often while facing inequities and discrimination at home. Their service and leadership are an essential part of our shared history and our ongoing commitment to truth, reconciliation, and justice.
As students and staff gather today to mark Remembrance Day, they will reflect on the sacrifices of all who have served, and those who continue to serve, in the Canadian Armed Forces. Through ceremonies, stories, and moments of silence, our school communities are helping students understand the importance of remembrance and our collective responsibility to work for peace.
Thank you to our staff for creating meaningful learning opportunities around these important days, and for supporting students to remember, reflect, and consider their role in building a more peaceful and compassionate future.
Regards,
Jon
